J BAR
HORSESHOE RANCH
Southwestern Colorado hunting and
fishing paradise
Colorado - Hinsdale County -
Powderhorn
A fisherman's paradise located in a scenic part of southwestern Colorado just 30 minutes south of Gunnison and Blue Mesa Reservoir and surrounded by national forest and wilderness area, the 39 deeded-acre J Bar Horseshoe Ranch is perfect refuge for those seeking rugged solitude in a spectacular setting. The property was found and purchased by a Forest Ranger in the early 1920's who was assigned to work in the area who, soon after, built the lodge and two cabins which served as rentals to anglers and hunters who visited routinely to fish the world-class trout-filled waters of Cebolla Creek that traverses the property. Bordered on two sides by the Powderhorn Primitive Wilderness Area and partially bordered on the other two sides by BLM lands, the property includes a three-level main residence, main lodge, seven hand-hewn log cabins, tack shed and storage building, two-sided barn, two trout-stocked ponds, five live streams, approximately 1/2 mile of creek frontage, and one well servicing the main residence and cabins producing 15 gpm. Decks off of the improvements provide outstanding views of Cebolla Creek and the expansive views of open country with tree covered hills, deep canyons, and perennial waters rich in nutrients and protection producing large brown, brookie and rainbow trout and providing a haven for wildlife including moose, elk, bear and deer. J Bar Horseshoe Ranch has many possibilities including a return to a rental fishing and hunting operation, family get-away or corporate retreat.
Location and Climate:
Located in the high plateau area of southeastern Colorado surrounded by BLM land and primitive wilderness area, the J Bar Horseshoe Ranch sits nestled next to a canyon with the scenic Cebolla Creek running through it. Cebolla Creek (Spanish for "onion" which grow along its banks), begins as a small stream near the Continental Divide and begins its descent towards J Bar Horseshoe Ranch from the San Juan Mountains into the Gunnison Valley where it forms the northern boundary of the La Garita Wilderness. Along the way, it changes character from a string of beaver ponds and tranquil, green spring creek-like stretches and then becomes a clear, purling freestone stream with pools stitched together by white pocket water as it reaches the J Bar Horseshoe Ranch.
J Bar Horseshoe Ranch is approximately 230 miles southwest of Denver and 30 miles south of Gunnison-Crested Butte offering a pristine and remote escape to solitude and enjoyment with many recreational opportunities in and around the property including trout fishing, hunting, trail-related sports as well as downhill skiing at Crested Butte Ski Resort just 30 miles north. The 60,100-acre Powderhorn Wilderness Area, the largest relatively flat expanse of alpine tundra in the lower 48 states, lays just west of the ranch providing 45 miles of trails to explore, and 40 miles north is the Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest body of water and home to the largest lake trout and Kokanee Salmon fishery in the United States.
Historically, the land comprising and surrounding the J Bar Horseshoe Ranch provided rich and fertile hunting and fishing for the Ute Indians. Today, J Bar Horseshoe Ranch still offers the same large game and fishing experiences for anglers and hunters who come to take advantage of the nutrient rich waters, lush forests and open sagebrush meadows that provide a haven for trophy elk, deer, and trout.
Located at the junction of two national byways, the Alpine Loop Back Country Byway and the Silver Thread National Scenic and Historic Byway, the small historic mining town of Lake City offers exciting off-road and paved byways for scenic drive and Jeep excursions which were once used to haul mining equipment and supplies to high-elevation silver and gold mines that helped fuel American expansion in the late 1800's and early 1900's. For everyday amenities and conveniences, the town of Gunnison, with a population of approximately 5,500, offers commuter air service via Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport, has a four-year University - Western State College, and provides full service medical services through Gunnison Valley Hospital. Telluride and Wolf Creek Pass Ski Resorts and Mesa Verde National Park provide easy day-trip getaways.
Climate:
The weather around the J Bar Horseshoe Ranch varies greatly throughout the day. Summer daytime temperatures range between 50 to 90F (10 to 32C) and nights are 40 to 60F (4 to 15C). Winter daytime temperatures range between -20 to +40F (-29 to +4C) and nights are -30 to +20F (-34 to -7C). Precipitation is minimal, but afternoon thunderstorms and strong winds are common during the summer. Snow accumulation varies greatly year to year.
Improvements:
Improvements on the J Bar Horseshoe Ranch consist of an older, 3,600 sq. ft. three-level main residence with a master bedroom and master bath, library/office, and sitting room on the third level, two bedrooms and one bathroom on the middle level, an additional master bedroom and bath on the main level with an attached three-car garage. In addition, a rustic log lodge, seven log cabins and tack room/storage building were built in the 1920-1930's and functioned as the main service office and lodging cabins which generated rental income for the fishing and hunting operation until the late 1990's. Each cabin has a rock wood-burning fireplace and a front porch with fantastic views of over three miles of Cebolla Creek and five live streams which traverse the property. A 30' x 50' two-sided hay and equipment storage barn is located across from the main residence, lodge and cabins, separated by County Road. A well provides 15 gpm to the ranch improvements.
